National Signing Day: 14 Football Players at Friendship Collegiate Announce College Picks

“WASHINGTON, D.C. (WUSA) -- At Friendship Collegiate Academy's National Signing Day Ceremony on Wednesday, 14 football players announced their decisions to sign letters of intent and move on to play football at the college level. They also made school history, as the 2011 football recruits represent the largest group of Friendship Collegiate athletes to ever receive college scholarships.

One by one, seniors stepped out from behind a long row of tables decorated with jerseys, helmets and footballs to announce their decisions. Columbia, Pittsburgh, Ohio, Morgan State, Central Connecticut State and Glenville State were just some of the colleges named.

Friendship Collegiate is a public charter school in Ward 7. Head football coach, Aazaar Rahim, attributes his players' success to the school's year round academic and athletic program. Instead of wrapping up the season at the end of November, Rahim works with his players all year long. Students also follow academic plans and attend interactive study halls to keep up with their schoolwork.

"When they understand that you care about them, they're going to go to extreme efforts to make you happy," said Rahim.

Quarterback Percee Goings will be attending Columbia University in the fall.

"I put in a lot of hard work...a lot of studying late at night," said Goings, who has a 4.1 GPA.

He also received an offer from Yale, but said he chose Columbia because the environment was very welcoming.

"Also, you'll never get bored in New York," said Goings.

Defensive back Malcolm Crockett has signed with Pittsburgh, and shares his teammate's enthusiasm for the fall.

"It's a great place to be successful...on and off the field," said Crockett.

While most students signed their letters of intent on Wedensday, some are still undecided.

Chairman of Friendship Public Charter School, Donald Hense, identifies Friendship Collegiate's football players as true scholar-athletes.

"It's not just about football...it's go and be successful at life in all that you're trying to do," said Hense.
