JERSEY CITY – As the state playoffs start up next weekend, few teams are entering the tournament as hot as St. Peter’s Prep.

The Marauders rolled to their seventh-straight victory after a dominant 42-7 win over Friendship Collegiate Academy of Washington D.C. yesterday afternoon at Caven Point.

St. Peter’s Prep (8-1)broke the game wide open early in the second half, scoring 21 unanswered points in the third quarter.

After Prep sophomore Tre Bell intercepted a pass to halt the visiting Knights’ first drive of the half, the Marauders and Savon Huggins took over from there. Huggins followed the interception with an 86-yard touchdown on a screen pass from Brandon Napoleon.

St. Peter’s blocked a punt by Friendship Academy (7-4), to set up Huggins’ 31-yard touchdown run on the next play. Huggins would cap off the surge with a 3-yard touchdown run, his fourth score of the afternoon.

Despite being bottled up by a strong Knights defensive line for most of the first half, Huggins finished with 91 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns for the game.

While the Friendship Academy defense keyed up on Huggins early, his teammates more than picked up the slack with a series of big plays. Napoleon sprinted down the right sideline for a 59-yard touchdown run in the opening quarter to make it 14-0. In the second quarter, Sheldon Royster took a reverse 68 yards for a touchdown of his own.

Royster added a 33-yard reception on a bubble screen in the third quarter and had a series of big tackles at safety. Napoleon was a threat with arm and legs, rushing for 86 yards on two carries and completing 4-of-7 passes for 158 yards.

The Marauders defense continued its torrid pace, as they limited an opponent to eight points or less for the seventh-straight game. Prep limited University of Cincinnati-bound RB Malcolm Crockett to just 25 yards on nine carries

Friendship Academy’s lone score came on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Percy Goings to Antonio Huff. Huff was Goings’ top target on the afternoon as he hauled in six receptions for 78 yards.
