The 2011-2012 Friendship Collegiate Academy Boy’s basketball Team has a new look this season with hopes to improve on last year’s record of 21-7 and, championship run. Head Coach James Pope begins this season with a group of players who can run an up-tempo style of basketball that will allow each player to use their athleticism in the open court. The Knights will be on the road for much of the early part of the season, featuring contest at nationally ranked Montrose Christian Academy (MD) and a match up against Brookhaven High School (OH).

Pope will have to replace three starters from the 2010-2011 WCSAA Championship Team. One of those starters is 6’9 center Robert Folk, who led the team in rebounding and blocked shots. The Knights will look to their returning players from last season to provide leadership and experience to a team that has a lot of young talent. Although the team may be young, most of the underclassmen returning have significant varsity experience.
One player that the Knights will look upon is junior guard Byron Ashe. Ashe will be counted on as a go-to player this year for the Knights. Ashe was second on the team in scoring last season and looks to improve as a lead guard for the team. Fellow junior guard Delonta Younger had a strong off season and looks to move into the starting line-up at the point guard position. Younger led the team in steals and assist as a sophomore last season.
Heading the senior class is forward Bakpoto Sawi, one of the most athletic players on the team and a very efficient scorer from the post and the perimeter. Sawi has the ability to play multiple positions and will be a reliable option on offense and defense. Senior guard Dante Thorpe has taken advantage of his off season as he increased both his strength and speed. With his great scoring ability and knowledge of the game, he will compete for one of the guard positions this year and will be looked upon for leadership.
Newcomer’s senior center Evan Dickerson, junior center/forward Mario Richardson, and sophomore guard Antyon Henson round off a team of great promise. Dickerson will be looked upon to compete and add toughness to the post position. Henson will add defense from the guard position, although a younger team member, will add leadership as well. Richardson will add size to the front line and give the Knights some inside scoring.
Built around youth and speed, this year’s team should be exciting to watch and will make some noise for the 2011-2012 season.
