For those who might be surprised by the margin of victory in top-ranked DeMatha's 45-12 victory over No. 18 Friendship Collegiate on Friday night, don't worry -- you are not alone.
Said Stags junior wide receiver Ryan Burbrink: "They're big, strong, and fast. And we played them last year, and it was a tough game. I thought this was going to be a close game all the way."
It wasn't close in large part because Lomax, Burbrink and senior defensive tackle Bobby Caffes each had perhaps the best game of their respective high school careers.
Caffes, 5 feet 10 and 261 pounds, made a critical tackle late in the first quarter to stop Friendship Collegiate on fourth and two at midfield.
To that point, neither team had scored, and DeMatha's offense had not managed a first down.
But two plays later, senior running back Michael Meriwether ran 44 yards for a touchdown.
"I thought I had blockers, and someone just came from behind me and got me, but it was a huge momentum play."= = =
