The 2010-11 Friendship Collegiate Academy basketball team will have the luxury of a very experienced JV team as all five starters will be moving up to the varsity team this season. The Knights will also feature five upperclassmen, including five seniors.
It was a bit of an up-and-down pre-season for Friendship this summer and fall as the Knights lost 7 seniors who are all attending and playing in college this season. The Knights finished last year as the #5 team in the DMV area.
Amongst the returning players, Friendship will be led this season by senior guard DaQuan Vaughan. Vaughan will lead a team where he is only one of two players returning from last year’s varsity team. He will be looked upon to lean a young, but very hungry team.
In addition to Vaughan, the Knights will look for seniors Robert Folk, Anthony Coward, Cabiness Braxton and Duane Dickens, to make up the core of the starting rotation.
At the forward position, Junior Bakpoto Sawi and Senior Anthony Coward will anchor the Knights following a season on the JV team that saw Sawi average 9.2 ppg. and a team-leading 7.6 rpg. Sawi also led the team in steals (31) and was amongst the team leaders in field goal percentage (40.0 percent). Also expected to see significant playing time this season will be junior Davon Murray. Murray is in his first season with the Knights, but he will provide depth at the center position.
In the back-court, the Knights will have depth from Junior Dante Thorpe, Junior Clarence Jones and Sophomore Michael Warren. Warren finished second on the JV team last season in scoring at 15.6 ppg. and was third in assists. He was also amongst the team leaders in three-point shooting. Thorpe averaged 11.0 ppg. last season, was third in triples made and was second in three-point percentage. Thorpe was one of the team’s leaders in steals and will be looked upon to play both guard positions.
Friendship will have a host of players on the bench this season as sophomore Byron Ashe and sophomore Delante Younger as newcomers joining the program this season. Both Ashe and Younger could make an immediate impact for the Knights at the guard position this season.
